A compendium of craft masquerading as art, art masquerading as craft, and craft extending its middle finger.

Knitting Cork

Knitters dream big. At Extreme Craft, we've seen knitting with huge tractors, tree cozies, and human organs. For sheer scale and audacity, nothing quite approaches The Knitting Map, a project in progress by performance artists half/angel in Cork, Ireland. Up to 25 knitters at a time are creating a gigantic knit representation of a map of the city. As if that weren't enough, the map is a constantly evolving, constantly changing work, with variations depending on the artist, the weather in the city, or the density of the traffic. Sattelite imagery provides the raw data for the project, which is translated into the pattern. For a sample pattern, click here. Volunteer today!
