A compendium of craft masquerading as art, art masquerading as craft, and craft extending its middle finger.

Ai Heart Pop Culture!

Wisconsin has a powerful effect on people. Love it or hate it, you're never the same after the cheese, the beer, and the frozen custard. So it went with Ai Kajima, a Japanese fellow who went to Wisconsin as a high school exchange student, and came out a full-blown cultural phenomenon. After his year in high school, he returned to Japan, but eventually returned to attend graduate school at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Kajima is a self-described fabric junkie, with a limitless appetite for sheets, duvets, and fabrics printed with all manner of pop culture. These fabrics are put into his multi-culti cuisinart, and come out as beautifully rendered "quilts". The craftsmanship is by all accounts exquisite...in fact, when I first saw his website, I thought I was looking at paintings by a devotee of the Icelandic artist Erro Thanks, Shane!
