A compendium of craft masquerading as art, art masquerading as craft, and craft extending its middle finger.

Tree Thugz

Okay...so this project is totally some hippie bullshit...but it's pretty great as well as having a slight sense of humor about its name. Australian-born artist Dawn Csutoros put together this project to foster awareness for the endangered Styx Forest in Tasmania. Her project involved countless volunteers and knitting events, which yielded 115 square meters of red knit material, which was placed in a line "hugging" the base of around 40 trees. The final result yielded a 12-minute video, condensed from 19 hours of time-lapse photographs, which was shown in a travelling exhibition entitled "barking up the wrong tree". The project doesn't quite live up to the photograph above...but then again, I don't see how anything could.
