Duct and Cover

Crafty people have been making...just about everything from duct tape for years. The "Duct Tape Guys" have been around for over a decade, and have a webstore that is overflowing with books, videos, and assorted projects. Duct tape companies have been long been the beneficiaries of all of this attention, but only recently have they begun to give back to "the community". Enter Duck Tape brand duct tape, a stalwart of the industry. They are a sponsor of the wonderfully named NASCAR driver Greg Biffle, and have introduced NINETEEN different colors of duct tape, including primary and flourescent varieties. Their amazing "Stuck at the Prom" contest is now celebrating its fifth blockbuster year.

Five years after its inception, the Duck® brand duct tape Stuck at Prom® Scholarship Contest is still awarding its top scholarship prize to high school students across North America. The previous first place winners have included a belle-of–the-ball themed couple, a pair clad in Henry VIII-era formalwear, an artfully contrived starburst ensemble, and the most recent couple, resembling Cinderella and Prince Charming. As the winners have shown, duct tape fashion has come a long way. One can only imagine what’s in store for this 2005 prom season.
The entries are in! There are separate categories for theme costumes, traditional prom outfits, and use of "plain silver" duct tape. There are hundreds of entries to choose from, each one more outrageous than the last. I have a feeling that Duck Tape is making the prom a lot more bearable for crafty fringe-dwellers that otherwise might be spending their prom nights knitting (and furiously jean-jamming).
